Creating A Friendly (and Showing Stopping) Living Room

 librarysofa 72w 30d 36.50h  867chair plain tan.tif rubik 36d 14h dwr 900

What are some key elements to consider when furnishing a “show stopper” living room?  Pay attention to the visual appeal, comfort and practicality of each piece respectively.   Use your  all of your senses to achieve these elements.  Bring in a professional, a friend or spouse to help select the fabrics.  The process can be time consuming.  So the more help you can get the better.  Consider selecting one sofa with a repetitive pattern on a soft and beautiful background.  Bring in one or two skirted, arm chairs (depending the size of the room) to coordinate with the sofa.  Add in your choice of coffee table complete the furnishing process.

Bold and Beautiful by Casey Fisher

DesignDecorBlog1_2010030914222

These chairs are not timid and neither is Casey Fisher, founder of Haute House.  His selection of fabrics and style have consistently been a mix of bold and beautiful.  Take the zebra and the medallion prints that have been paired with those beautiful velvety material.  They are fun!  I absolutely love his details in the button tufting on the inside back, the top arm panels, the contrast welting and the exposed solid wooden legs.  They can be pulled up to any formal dining tables or scattered as accent chairs.  These details make his collection stand out very tastefully and they sure keep the price beaters from copying.  They were comfortable for people who are tall and petite.  I know for a fact because I sat on them they walked out of the door.  We sold a half dozen of them for a top dollar at $1,200 each.

This original frame is the gem of Haute House, in my opinion.  Although I am sure that the company has increased its gem trunk or best sellers list.  Neiman Marcus and Horchow carry Haute House upholstery.

Shutters come in varies colors. I would consider espresso or wood stained. White shutters don't coordinate w/ this multi-million $$ Brownstone.

When dressing your windows it is important to select the material that coordinate. Do it correctly you will the aesthetic and price value to your home. Let the interior tell stories of your family and style of the house.

Furnishing A Seaside Home

To creat a successful fabric furnishings scheme in a seaside home, take your cues from the textures and colors of nature. Fabrics such as nubbly linens, rough burlap and watered silk are perfect for bringing the outdoors inside, while a palatte of the sky blues, cloudy whites, and soft grays creates a soothing harmony in a coastal setting.

Although plain textural fabrics should be the foundation of your design scheme, introducing an occasional splash of pattern is a good way to prevent an tinerior from appearing too tonal. Fabric designs that incoporate blowsy florals or bold stripes are not a good idea, however. Instead, go for the simple tickings, ginghams or small-scale florals that reflect the informal character of seaside style.

Cotton is a favored fabric in coastal interiors, because of its crisp appearance and lightness. Available in various textures and forms including cotton canvas, brushed cotton, terrycloth, muslin, and denim, cotton is wonderfully versatile and can be used for a wide range of decorative purposes, from bedding to curtains, and upholstery. When selecting fabrics for your decorating needs pay as much as you can afford because the more expensive the material, the softer and more appealing it will become over time.

Linen is another fabric that ages well. Available in natural colors including ivery, tan, gray, and gree, linen is especially desirable in hot climates since it says a degree or two below room termperature. Linen also resists dirt and can hold up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp, making it ideal for humid conditions too.

Installing a chandelier from the ceiling is essential to complete the furnishing scheme. It will light up a room and definitely make it cozy during the evening. Selecting a chandelier is like selecting your wedding ring - very personal and costs. The best one for a peaceful coastal living room is one with clear glass details, with tear drops in aged wrought iron frame.

Got Client Blessings

I have just got another client's blessing for our design plan to go
forward. Wow! Hard work does pay off. Thank goodness.

For the dining room I am marrying the elegance and retro-modern styles in
a 11' x 13' space.
This relationship is going to be a tight and faithful one because of the
room's dimensions. This petite-sized dining room can contain friends and
family members to the curvy back chairs long enough for lots of clean, G
rated conversations during any meals. According to our design plan the long
server with the cabriole legs will go under the window on the back wall.
The chairs are chic and comfy with low backs, lesser distractions and
details. The table surface space is generous, plenty of room for foods,
holiday decorations and elbow room.

Organic use @ William Sonoma to or not to be???

I read somewhere that Williams-Sonoma among top U.S. consumers of organic cotton. Terrific! Organic cotton is good for your body and gentle on our environment. Wish that the fashion industry would push for organic fabrics. Organic cotton won't have and shouldn't have a drop of pesticide. Ah I am in love with WS again!

Office/Library Design Strategies

Our client has very strong interest in making this  10’ x 14’  room into a cozy, quiet and serious office.  She will bring an existing loveseat from her former home as of today.  I say that because by the time she places an order for the upholstery that might change.  The sliding glass door opens out into the sunroom and at the opposite end there are two bi-folding doors that lead to a very nice closet.  (By the way the previous owners had no creativity – doors were bi-folding doors or sliding doors.)   And I pulled out my pen and pad to jot down her wish for Bedroom #2.

My preliminary design plan is to place the loveseat in front of that sliding glass doors to cut off the direct traffic pattern from the door to the sliders and to cut off the lovely sunroom view.  You all are probably thinking “why, why?”  My design strategy is to keep the curiosity, focus and concentration of the minds inside the library/office.  And this is generally accomplished with a long piece of furnishing.  My second preliminary design plan would add one chest of draws, one multi-purpose cabinet, a decorative, and small wastebasket, replace the rug with hardware wood floor, add a small arm chair.  Following the second preliminary plan I move to the window treatments.  And I am thinking of long curtains hanging on a motorized rod; operated with a small remote.  For the third preliminary design strategy is to place the desk up against the wall adjacent to the entry door.  Next, I select paint colors for the walls.  I have the heavy neutral colors in my mind for this room.  Paint color selection will be a piece of cake.  I am looking forward to this completing this room in 8 to 10 weeks or maybe by the end of the summer if materials are out of stock.

What for?

Ikea joined Forest Legality Alliance to curb illegal logging. This is a joke! Why bother when 90% of their furnishings made from wood chips and pressed wood - all recycleable wood? I bet the recent action serve their marketing purposes?

Keep an eye on Williams-Sonoma Inc. price changes. WS is working with overseas and domestic manufacturers to address rising raw material costs, but is heavily focused on creating cost savings in other areas to balance overhead. This could mean that hard goods may rise and soft goods ie pillows, table linens, beddings may stay the same or slope down.

Three Seater Sofa for another condo in Bethesda.

Check out the wood base stretching from the left to the right. Client loved the fact that this piece has no skirt, is medium size and that she can add three more seatings. Perfect dimensions and style for my client's living/family room.

This modern sofa is not for everyone. What I like about this piece is its borderline characteristics to coordinate with another style. The end result is the New Traditional - that's what my clients want. More pictures to follow.

Room Jewelry

A bedroom could always use a piece of lighting jewel for warmth and some jazz. The general rule is to select a single to three lights for a small room. Shop for four to six lights for a medium to large. They are many options to selecting the frame finish. Consider some hand painted frames when your room theme is a shabby chic or French Country. Avoid selecting the Venetian cut glass for your room jewel. My favorite is the tear drops, with some crystal swags between the arms.

2 chairs in Chevy Chase, MD get a make over using 2 fabrics

I am getting excited and gigglely because I saved two lovely barrel back chairs from the d u m p! So simple straight back that went straight to the floor, petite, no decorative cording outlining the chairs, has great structure, just need some cosmetic changes.

After a one hour consultation regarding disposing or salvaging her chairs and finalizing the two fabrics that we recommended. So the outside will be covered in the large floral pattern. The back and the seat cushions will be recovered using the small diamond patterns with small chocolate brown dots. Going to be so sophisticated. These chairs deserve some upgrade - much needed.

Jessica (name falsified), the client asked for the proposal. Ta daaa we sent it over yesterday and she approved it the same day. Very reasonable at a price of $1196 per chair plus tax. Reupholstering is often slightly less than purchasing two brand new and same scale chairs. Believe it.

From my experience working with different clients reupholstery is often less than buying new.
